Ja Morant is already embracing his new city, and that support is extending well beyond the Trail Blazers. The newly acquired guard made an appearance to back Portland’s WNBA expansion team, the Fire, sharing a message for fans in his adopted city.
“What’s up Blazers fans, Ja here. I’m in the city, here to support the Fire, let’s get it,” Morant said in a video posted by the team’s X (formerly Twitter) account.
The gesture comes just weeks after Morant’s blockbuster arrival in Portland. The Grizzlies traded the two-time All-Star to the Trail Blazers on June 29 in exchange for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, ending a turbulent stretch in Memphis that included multiple suspensions and injuries limiting him to just 79 games over his final three seasons with the franchise.
Morant has since described the move as a welcome reset, telling reporters he is simply grateful for a fresh start.
The Fire, meanwhile, are in the middle of their own new beginning. Portland joined the WNBA as an expansion franchise alongside the Toronto Tempo this year, selecting its inaugural roster through an expansion draft back in April.
The addition gives the city its second WNBA team in franchise history, following the original Fire that played from 2000 to 2002.
For Morant, the show of support fits a city still adjusting to two new basketball chapters unfolding at once. While questions remain about how he will fit into a crowded Portland backcourt that already includes Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Shaedon Sharpe, and Scoot Henderson, Morant’s early gesture suggests he is looking to establish himself as a genuine part of the community rather than just another new arrival.
With training camp still months away, moments like this one offer an early glimpse of how Morant hopes to be received in Portland, on and off the court, as he tries to rebuild both his game and his reputation in a fresh environment.
