It's been a major week for Alan Ritchson, who was announced as the star of an upcoming action movie on Netflix. Titled Maelstrom, the film will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. Both Collet-Serra and Ritchson have delivered hits for Netflix in the past. The filmmaker's action-thriller Carry-On is the third-most-watched Netflix original film of all time with 172 million views, while Ritchson's sci-fi action film War Machine is ranked ninth on the same list, with nearly 140 million views. The action star will also return for a sequel to War Machine, but before that, he'll headline a pure action movie that debuts next week.
Ritchson is one of the biggest stars to emerge from the streaming era, thanks to his hit Prime Video series Reacher. The show has aired three seasons so far, with a fourth season and a spin-off titled Neagley on the way. The success of Reacher propelled Ritchson to stardom and scored him a role in the blockbuster Fast and Furious franchise. He was also among the ensemble cast of Guy Ritchie's period spy movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which starred Henry Cavilland Eiza González. However, first on the docket for Ritchson is a new action movie that premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2025.
Here's When You Can Watch Alan Ritchson's New Action Movie
We're talking about Motor City, in which Ritchson stars as an ex-con who challenges a gangster after being framed for a crime he didn't commit. Directed by Potsy Ponciroli, Motor City unfolds in 1970s Detroit and also features Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, Ben McKenzie, Lionel Boyce, and Pablo Schreiber. The movie currently holds a 71% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with critics highlighting its stylized action sequences and thumping soundtrack. Ponciroli previously directed the acclaimed Western Old Henry, which has a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Incidentally, Old Henry was among the most-watched movies on Netflix last week with nearly 4 million views. Headlined by Tim Blake Nelson, the Western is still among the most popular titles on the streamer, according to FlixPatrol. Motor City will be released theatrically on July 24.
