Range Rover GT teased as new electric grand touring SUV

Range Rover has released the first teasers for the all-new Range Rover GT. As the brand’s fifth model, it is a grand touring SUV of a new kind and, with its construction on Jaguar Land Rover’s fresh Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), the first of an all-electric Range Rover.

In the run up to a full unveiling later in the year, the company has made available some initial images and particulars of the GT’s interior. True to the brand’s minimalist ethos, the cabin is home to a single-screen infotainment unit and a driver display that does away with the conventional instrument cluster. There is a concealed air vent running the full width of the dash and woven textile trim that houses the speakers for a more refined look. The intent behind such design choices, Range Rover notes, is to keep both visual and acoustic clutter at bay for a quieter ride and give occupants easier digital access to the vehicle’s functions.

When it comes to power, the GT will be a battery-electric from the start, making it the inaugural Range Rover on the EMA platform. It will be built at the Halewood facility in the U.K., in the same plant where hybrid and internal combustion models are produced. The automaker has also put on the record that hybrid variants are in the offing for the model’s lifecycle.

Martin Limpert, managing director of Range Rover, characterizes the GT as the most car-like model Range Rover has ever put together. He says it manages to marry the off-road credentials of a Range Rover with the long-distance comfort of a proper grand tourer.

For now, prototypes can be seen on the road in a special camouflage wrap after being inspired by the Gaydon countryside in England, home to the engineering and design staff. We’ll get more details later this year.
