A report from Automotive News has come to light indicating that Acura is in the process of building a new, larger three-row flagship SUV. The vehicle is intended to occupy the top spot in the brand’s lineup and put it head to head with the Lexus TX.

For the time being the project is referred to as the “Acura XL” within the company, but do not expect to see that on the production model. While Acura has yet to say what the flagship SUV will be called, maybe it will be called something like the “Acura LDX.”

Should the report be right, we can look for the SUV to make its appearance in the latter part of the decade, with production slated to get under way in September 2029. It is meant to be a hybrid, in keeping with the electrification plans at Honda and Acura, though no performance numbers or powertrain specifics have been put forward.

The move would give the luxury marque a more commanding position in the segment of roomy, family-friendly SUVs and provide a proper counter to the Lexus TX. Acura is said to be aiming for some 40,000 units a year from the new model, which would make it a key player in North America.

Acura has not released any official news about the flagship SUV, so stay tuned.
