Range Rover GT: Land Rover previews what looks like a car

All the world seems simply mad about SUVs. So why not pick now for the an iconic SUV brand to debut what looks like a car?

By swapping its traditional upright off-roader stance for a distinctly car-like profile, Range Rover is expanding its portfolio into uncharted territory. The British luxury brand has confirmed a fifth distinct model line: the Range Rover GT, an electric grand tourer that's low-slung, fastback silhouette and long-wheelbase proportions signal a significant departure from the brand's familiar SUV architecture.

The move places Land Rover squarely in competition with high-end electric tourers, using sleek, lower-profile packaging while retaining the all-wheel-drive credentials that define the marque.

A New Platform Architecture

Underpinning this shift is Land Rover's Electric Modular Architecture (EMA). The GT serves as the inaugural battery-electric vehicle (BEV) on the new platform, which is engineered to place battery modules low within the floorpan. This layout lowers the vehicle's center of gravity to support classic grand-touring dynamics without sacrificing essential ground clearance for off-road work.

While the GT will launch strictly as a pure EV, the architecture retains packaging flexibility. Range Rover plans to introduce a full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) variant later in the model's lifecycle. Production will take place at the company's Halewood manufacturing facility in the UK, running alongside existing combustion and hybrid models.

Architectural Approach to Interior Design

Alongside the platform announcement, Range Rover offered a first look at the GT's cabin, which leans heavily into a minimalist, architectural theme.

Rather than adopting full-width dashboard screens, the GT utilizes a streamlined digital layout. A dedicated, standalone screen replaces the traditional instrument cluster to keep primary telemetry directly in the driver's sightline. A single central touchscreen handles secondary infotainment and cabin controls. And a full-width hidden air vent forms a continuous horizontal line across the cockpit, while a textured, woven textile wraps the dashboard-concealing integrated audio speakers beneath its surface.

The long wheelbase allowed designers to prioritize rear-seat packaging, resulting in what Range Rover claims will be class-leading second-row legroom.

Final Validation Phase

Prototype vehicles are currently undergoing final worldwide validation testing. The test fleet wears a specialized camouflage wrap created by the brand's in-house design team in Gaydon, UK. Featuring gold contour lines derived from local topographic maps, the design is intended to highlight the vehicle's long-distance, touring-focused proportions while concealing final body details.

Range Rover is expected to release full technical specifications, performance figures, and powertrain details later this year ahead of the vehicle's market launch.
