President Donald Trump has finalized a landmark agreement with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia centered on civilian nuclear cooperation, according to Reuters.

The pact allows the kingdom to develop a U.S.-supported nuclear energy program and could eventually permit Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium under agreed safeguards, according to the Wall Street Journal, while opening billions of dollars in opportunities for American nuclear companies, the White House noted in a statement.

Supporters say the deal strengthens U.S.-Saudi strategic ties, boosts American industry, and counters Chinese and Russian influence in the region. Critics argue that allowing uranium enrichment could increase nuclear proliferation risks and fuel a regional arms race, particularly given tensions with Iran.

The agreement now heads to Congress for review.
