The future monarch is officially a teenager and Prince William and Princess Kate marked the occasion by sharing a smart new portrait of their son.

Happy Birthday, Prince George!

The eldest child of Prince William and Princess Kate turned 13 on July 22, and to mark the occasion his parents shared a never-before-seen photo of the teenager.

In the photo, posted to Instagram, the future king is seen looking directly at the camera. He is dressed smartly, wearing a dark blazer and crisp white shirt.

The portrait was taken by photographer Matt Porteous after last month's Trooping the Colour ceremony.

"Happy 13th Birthday, George!" read the caption, alongside a party popper emoji.

After William, George is next in line to the British throne. He is followed in the line of succession by sister Princess Charlotte, 11, and brother Prince Louis, 8.

The Wales children represent the next generation of royals, along with Prince Harry's and Duchess Meghan's children Prince Archie, 7, and 5-year-old Princess Lilibet.

It's been quite the summer for Prince George, who has been seen at several royal and national events, including Trooping the Colour in June for the official celebration of King Charles' birthday and Wimbledon to watch the men's singles final.

Earlier this month, George, along with his siblings, cheered mom Kate along as she completed the Three Peaks Challenge mountain climb to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Kate was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 but announced in January 2025 that she was relieved to be in remission from the disease.

Last year, the Prince and Princess of Wales celebrated George's 12th birthday with a photo of him looking like a mirror image of his father. In the snap, the young prince is seen smiling while resting on a wooden gate.

In contrast to this year's portrait, he is dressed casually, sporting a blue and white button-down shirt and chocolate brown zip-up vest.

George will follow in his father's footsteps when he starts at a new school in September, the prestigious Eton College in Berkshire. Prince William and brother Prince Harry both attended the boarding school for boys.

The school costs around $84,400 a year and George will study there until he is 18.

Navigating the teenage years and progressing through adolescence will be a unique experience for George compared to his Eton friends, he is after all, being carefully prepared to one day be Britain's reigning monarch.
