Caitlin Clark appeared for a July 20 post-game media session. She addressed the latest technical foul she received against the New York Liberty.
Clark now has 6 technical fouls this season, and just two whistle calls away from a one-game suspension under WNBA rules. Clark felt the referee blew the whistle much faster than expected.
Clark explained, “I just yelled at him to call it. Obviously, it was a pretty quick technical but, whatever.”When asked if she would change her approach knowing she is nearing the suspension, she answered, “No.”

The technical came after she shouted for a call following a hard screen in the opening quarter. WNBA officials issue quick technicals for arguing to keep games from getting out of hand.
Despite the risk of a suspension, Clark remains firm in her stance. She has said that the emotional edge she plays with is the thing that leads to her scoring and leadership.
Head coach Stephanie White has mentioned managing technical fouls strategically, while the organization has even appealed calls earlier in the year.
The suspension threat: Why one more technical could derail Indiana’s season
During the July 18 home game against the New York Liberty at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Fever picked up a 108-88 win, led by Kelsey Mitchell’s game-high 33 points. However, Clark received her 6th technical foul of the season.
Credit to the first quarter when she felt Liberty center Jonquel Jones set an illegal screen, according to a report by The Athletic.
Clark played around 26 minutes in that game. She scored 17 points, shot 5-for-5 from the free-throw line with 7 assists.
WNBA rules state that an 8th technical foul results in an automatic one-game suspension without pay. Every two technicals after that trigger another one-game suspension, along with financial fines.
Clark picked up earlier technicals during matchups against the Golden State Valkyries, Chicago Sky, and Phoenix Mercury before this latest incident against New York.
Indiana appealed some of those earlier calls, but Clark’s stance has stayed the same every single time she is asked about them.
Losing their star point guard for even one game would create major problems for Indiana. Clark leads the team with averages of 20.7 points, 7.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game and stands among the league leaders in assists.
The team has already had to manage her absence due to injuries this season, making any potential suspension costly for their upcoming games.
