President Donald Trump‘s approval rating among seniors has fallen to a three-month low, according to the latest Economist/YouGov poll.
The survey found Trump’s approval rating among Americans age 65 and older dropped to 39 percent, his weakest showing with the demographic in nearly three months. It is the first time his approval among seniors has fallen into the 30s since late April, a notable shift for a voting bloc that has historically leaned Republican and remains one of the most reliable electorates ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle responded with a statement previously provided to Newsweek, saying Trump’s November 5, 2024, election victory — in which nearly 80 million Americans voted for him — remains “the ultimate poll.” He also credited the Trump administration with progress on jobs, inflation and housing affordability.
Poll details and methodology
The latest result marks a decline from Economist/YouGov surveys throughout May, June, and early July, when Trump’s approval among seniors consistently remained in the low- to mid-40s.
Overall, the poll found Trump with a 36 percent approval rating and 60 percent disapproval. Among Americans 65 and older, 39 percent approved of his job performance while 60 percent disapproved.
The survey was conducted among 1,602 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
A review of Economist/YouGov polling shows Trump’s approval among seniors had not fallen below 40 percent since late April. A survey conducted April 24–27 among 1,836 U.S. adults found his overall approval at 37 percent and disapproval at 59 percent, while seniors gave him 37 percent approval and 61 percent disapproval.
Allen Houston of YouGov said in a release sent to Newsweek that Trump “remains unpopular, with 36% of Americans strongly or somewhat approving of Trump’s job performance and 60% disapproving,” adding that his net approval rating of negative 24 is near the lowest point of his second term and below the low points of both his first term and Joe Biden’s presidency.
Wider polling picture
The decline comes as Trump continues to face broader polling challenges on the economy and inflation.
An Echelon Insights survey conducted among 1,004 likely voters found Trump’s approval among seniors at 38 percent, compared with 62 percent disapproval. Overall, the poll recorded 38 percent approval and 61 percent disapproval.
A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll conducted among 1,776 registered voters found 41 percent of seniors approved of Trump’s job performance, while 59 percent disapproved. Overall, Trump received 42 percent approval and 54 percent disapproval.
