President Curtis co-creator James Siciliano addresses if the Rick and Morty spinoff will return for season 2.
Created by Dan Harmon and James Siciliano, the upcoming series follows President Andre Curtis and his staff as they tackle the bizarre challenges Rick Sanchez typically ignores, from interdimensional negotiations to supernatural cases and mysterious occurrences. Keith David returns as Curtis, joined by Stephanie Beatriz, Jim Rash, Dan Bakkedahl, and Kelsey Scott. The spinoff is set to premiere July 26.
Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for President Curtis, co-creator James Siciliano addressed whether there are plans for the Rick and Morty spinoff to return for season 2, saying that the team would love to continue the show beyond its first season.
While season 1 was designed with a complete arc, they intentionally left room for future stories, making a second season something they would be excited to pursue. Read his full comments below:
Ash Crossan: Now, for President Curtis, do you have an overall plan for multiple seasons? Are you planning one season? What is the thought?
James Siciliano: Well, we certainly would love to do more than one season. We approached this one, obviously, talking about it as far as a season goes and tried to build it lightly serialized, in a sense—an arc for the season. So, it’d be nice to keep it going.
While Siciliano and others would love to continue President Curtis into a second season, the fate of the Rick and Morty spinoff will likely be determined by how it performs with critics, audiences, and most importantly, its viewership. At the time of writing, President Curtis only has two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn't enough to qualify for a score, though both of them are overwhelmingly positive.
Cheryl Eddy of io9.com writes, "You can't go wrong with Keith David in any context, but he brings a gravitas here that makes Curtis' presidential proclamations entirely believable, no matter how ridiculous they may be." Peter Martin of ScreenAnarchy says, "Gloriously silly and profanely stupid, President Curtis features mile-a-minute jokes and a plethora of LOL visual gags, which makes perfect sense, since it's a spin-off from Rick & Morty. ... A mirth-making machine."
In ScreenRant's President Curtis review, Ben Gibbons says, "The Rick and Morty Spinoff feels disappointingly similar to the original... President Curtis shines the spotlight on one of the most enduring background characters from Rick and Morty, but it doesn't really break the mold."
While an early positive critical response is certainly a good sign for President Curtis, the real test will come from viewers. How audiences respond, especially when it comes to the show's viewership numbers, will ultimately shape its future. For now, a second season remains possible, but the audience will have the final say on whether the spinoff continues.
President Curtis premieres July 26 on Adult Swim at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT, airing right after the Rick and Morty season 9 finale, with new episodes streaming the next day on HBO Max.
