When Power Rangers returns to screens it will be unlike anything fans have seen before. After a hiatus following 2023’s Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury, the next iteration of the Rangers will be a complete and total reboot on Disney+. Produced by Hasbro and Disney, the new Power Rangers TV show will be rebuilding the series from the ground up.
For the first time since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers premiered in 1993, Power Rangers will be produced without using footage from Japan's Super Sentai. With Super Sentai concluding its remarkable 50-year run in February 2026, Disney and Hasbro now have the opportunity to create a version of Power Rangers with an identity entirely its own. That creative freedom, though, will mean the Disney+ reboot makes major changes, especially when it comes to Zords.
One of the biggest advantages of adapting Super Sentai was financial. Reusing Japanese footage allowed Power Rangers to deliver Zord-vs-giant-monster battles every week without an enormous budget. Without the Super Sentai footage, Disney and Hasbro will have to rethink how Zords are used. Many staples of classic Power Rangers are simply going to be too expensive to include in every single installment of the Disney+ reboot, especially the Zord battles fans have grown used to occurring in every episode.
The Power Rangers Reboot Probably Won't Have Regular Zord Battles
For generations of fans, Zord battles have been a defining feature of Power Rangers. Nearly every episode eventually followed the same rhythm: the Rangers defeat a monster in hand-to-hand combat, the villain grows to enormous size, and the heroes summon their Zords to finish the fight. The Disney+ reboot, however, will likely break that tradition.
Everything about the new series suggests Disney and Hasbro are approaching Power Rangers as a prestige sci-fi drama rather than a Saturday-morning action show, which means a much bigger budget. In the past, Zord battles were achieved through Super Sentai footage, often featuring performers in elaborate suits stomping through miniature cities. While charming, that style was also extremely cost-effective. Without Super Sentai footage, the Disney+ series will have to replace those practical effects, likely with high-end CGI.
The problem this creates for the traditional Power Rangers formula is immediately obvious. Creating feature-quality giant robot battles every episode will be enormously expensive. As a result, the reboot will probably use the Zords much more sparingly. Instead of appearing every week, giant robot battles may become major events that the story builds toward over several episodes.
While the change may make some long-term Power Rangers fans hesitant, this approach could actually strengthen the franchise. If Zord battles become rarer they will be more significant. It would also make the Rangers' ordinary victories in the Power Rangers Disney+ reboot matter more. Previous seasons often guaranteed that every conflict would end with a giant monster battle. Removing this would make the heroes' choices outside their Zords feel just as important as the moments when they finally climb into the cockpit.
Less Zords Won't Be The Only Change In The Power Rangers Reboot
Power Rangers without regular Zord battles already sounds radically different, but the change may end up being one of the least dramatic aspects of the Disney+ reboot. Disney and Hasbro’s new Power Rangers TV show will abandon the three decades of interconnected lore that began when MMPR hit screens in 1993. The reboot is not simply another season of Power Rangers that extends the existing timeline. It is an entirely new beginning.
That creative reset allows Disney and Hasbro to completely reinvent Power Rangers in more ways than simply having fewer Zords. Rather than focusing primarily on weekly monster battles, the Disney+ Power Rangers reboot will place much greater emphasis on character-focused storytelling. The Rangers themselves will become the heart of the series in a way not seen before. The result will be a more serialized narrative with story arcs that stretch across an entire season rather than being resolved in a single episode, allowing for more emotional depth and higher stakes.
The format is changing too. Instead of producing more than 20 episodes per season, the Disney+ reboot of Power Rangers is reportedly targeting seasons of 8-10 episodes, with installments running approximately 40 to 50 minutes each. That structure is much closer to the storytelling style audiences expect from major Disney+ franchises like the MCU and Star Wars, which will fit the more cinematic tone Disney and Hasbro are reportedly aiming for.
By the time the Power Rangers reboot finally arrives on Disney+, it will likely be that having fewer Zord battles is one of the least significant changes. The franchise is entering a completely new era, one that will redefine every assumption audiences have had about Power Rangers for more than three decades.
