A Portland man threw a knife at police officers, then fled, while continuing to threaten them with other weapons, including a stun gun, authorities said.
Police arrested Stephen Scazzafavo, 33, Monday afternoon after responding to reports of an assault near Northeast Brazee Street and 122nd Avenue in Portland, the Police Bureau said.
Investigators determined that Scazzafavo had threatened a work crew in the area, hit one worker with a bike pump and repeatedly hit the crew’s vehicle as the workers tried to escape the assault, police said. Police said the attack caused thousands of dollars of damage to the vehicle. The workers were not injured.
When police arrived, they identified Scazzafavo as the suspect and attempted to arrest him, but Scazzfavo resisted, throwing a knife at them, police said. The knife whizzed past the officers and cracked a patrol car’s windshield.
Scazzafavo ran, followed by officers. As he fled, Scazzafavo threatened the officers with a metal hiking stick and a flashlight that doubled as a stun gun, police said.
Scazzafavo faces nearly a dozen charges, including attempted assault, unlawful use of a weapon, attempted assault of a public safety officer and criminal mischief.
He is in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Center and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
According to court records, Scazzafavo has previous convictions for harassment, assault, criminal trespass and indecent exposure, dating back to 2020.
