A brush fire on the site of a former Christmas tree farm outside Dallas in the central Willamette Valley is forcing evacuation orders and power outages for dozens of residents Tuesday afternoon.
The Oak Villa fire broke out shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday about 15 miles from Salem. Arriving responders immediately requested backup, and a third alarm was later issued, bringing in additional crews to battle the blaze.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post that homes near the fire had been evacuated and urged residents to avoid the area. Authorities closed Oak Villa Road between Kings Valley Highway and East Ellendale Avenue to allow emergency crews access to the fire.
Pacific Power cut electricity to more than 50 customers in the area as a precaution. Utility officials say they are monitoring fire conditions but hope to get power back to the majority of residents by 6:30 p.m.
The fire comes amid searing temperatures nearing 100 degrees across the state, conditions that can contribute to rapid fire growth.
