A popular athletic brand closed its retail location on the Country Club Plaza this weekend.
Nike, famous for its sports clothing and shoes, closed its location at 450 Nichols Road. The Star reached out to Nike and to the Plaza for comment but did not hear back. At the shop on Monday afternoon, workers inside opened the door - covered in brown packaging paper to obstruct the interior - showing no merchandise was inside.
The company was founded in 1964 by a track coach named Bill Bowerman and one of his former athletes, Phil Knight, in Oregon, according to the company website. Nike has since grown to over 280 stores across the country, and even more around the world.
The next closest Nike location is the outlet shop inside Tanger Kansas City at Legends at 1803 Village West Parkway. It is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
This closure comes after several recent openings in the historic shopping district, including Mersea, Alo, Eileen Fischer and the announcement that Reformation will open this winter.
