Charizard has easily become one of Pokémon's most recognizable mons since the franchise first debuted. Across nearly three decades, Game Freak and The Pokémon Company have repeatedly found new ways to reinvent the fan-favorite Fire/Flying-type without changing what made it iconic in the first place.
From the introduction of Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y in Pokémon X & Y to its towering Gigantamax form in Pokémon Sword & Shield, Charizard has arguably received more drastic redesigns than almost any other Pokémon. Outside the mainline games, alternate designs have popped up in various spin-offs, special card artwork and holographics, anime-exclusive transformations, and even crossover designs such as Street Fighter's Ryu collab.
At the same time, newer Pokémon games have continued introducing fresh evolutions and alternate forms for classic creatures, fueling constant fan discussion about which longtime favorites deserve the next major upgrade. And in a brand-new upcoming release, Charizard is officially getting a wild new design that we definitely never saw coming (via X).
There's a completely unexpected new Charizard design that was just officially unveiled by PokéXperto on X that is unlike anything we've seen before, featured as part of an upcoming merchandise release on July 23, 2026. The new line of plush Pokémon toys includes a patchwork-style Charizard collectible plushie designed by Sean Wotherspoon, and will be available exclusively at Pokémon Centers in Japan.

Collectors looking to get their hands on these new releases will have to wait for a larger global launch, if there is one at all, or will have to wait for them to be resold online via Japanese buyers who can claim them in stores starting July 23. They're sure to be a hot-button item among Pokémon die-hards, and have already generated some buzz on social media, such as the official Pokeplush subreddit.
While it's unfortunate the new Charizard patchwork plush isn't more widely available, fans can still appreciate the unique quilted-style design and patchwork aesthetic from afar. As far as Charizard redesigns go, this is definitely one of the cuter ones, and it's a nice change of pace from the more intense and intimidating recent designs such as Mega Charizard X's black-and-blue dragon-like appearance, Gigantamax Charizard's towering flame-covered form, and the fierce battle-ready artwork that has become a staple of modern Pokémon releases.
