Pixar's new sci-fi sleeper hit is a streaming smash on Disney+

Pixar's latest big hit has now been in theaters for a month, and the hunt for $1 billion continues. Four weekends into its run, Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and the rest of the gang have helped Toy Story 5 to $890 million so far. Still ranking in the top three in the U.S., the film is expected to join The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Antoine Fuqua’s musical biopic, Michael, as 2026's only billion-dollar movies so far.

With a cast that also boasts the likes of John Ratzenberger, Tony Hale, Bonnie Hunt, Keanu Reeves, Conan O’Brien, Ernie Hudson, and many more, as well as being the fifth installment of one of the most popular animated franchises, financial success was always going to come from Toy Story 5. But for an original Pixar idea featuring a newcomer in the lead role, box office triumph was much less likely. Earlier this year, Pixar released Hoppers, which stars Piper Curda as an animal lover who uses new technology to become a robotic beaver, looking to save a local habitat.

Directed by Daniel Chong and written by Jesse Andrews, Hoppers was hoping to shake off the poor performance of Pixar's original idea predecessor, Elio, which flopped both critically and commercially. Thankfully, Hopperswas a success. Against a reported production budget of $150 million, Hoppers returned a positive $388 million worldwide, split between a domestic haul of $166 million and a further $222 million from overseas markets. A few months later, the film is still proving popular, ranking as one of the ten most-streamed movies on Disney+ in the U.S.

'Hoppers' Could Be an Outsider for Oscars Success

Although Toy Story 5 might have a better likelihood of winning the Best Animated Feature award at next year's Oscars, Hoppers might face an outside chance, especially following the critics' response to the film. With a 94% score from critics and 93% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Hoppers is one of the best-reviewed animated movies of the year. In Ross Bonaime's review of the movie for Collider, he called it one of Pixar's "funniest movies yet."
