In r/CasualIreland, someone asked, "Share your dating app stories. Good or Bad!" Surprisingly, there were a lot more success stories than I had expected, but also a few "bad" experiences that got me shaking my head as well. It really can be a mixed bag when it comes to dating online. Here's what people said:
."I met my fiancé (we've been together for seven years and plan to marry next year) on a sugar baby dating website. Oddly enough, it has been the happiest and healthiest relationship of my life. We instantly clicked and couldn't get enough of each other. We did long distance (2.5 hours apart) for four years before buying a home together."
."Matched on Tinder on Valentine’s Day last year, and organized to go for a few drinks that Friday. The pub had to kick us out because we didn’t realize they were closing up. We were so engrossed in each other and ended up out until 2 a.m. I’m not originally from the city we live in, so I went to my hometown for the weekend on Saturday. I jokingly said the next day, you should call down here for a spin, and she came (about an hour and a half drive each way). A spin was had, and off she went back to the city for the night. She had told me about a concert she had tickets to in Dublin that Monday, but her friend had pulled out. I said sure feck it, I’ll drive you up from Cork and go with you. That was all in the space of four days. We live together now and will most definitely be marrying this woman."
"That was also after about two years of never getting past either a first date or the talking stage. And every one of those came from Tinder. Firm believer everyone will find the one eventually."
."(32M) The last girl I dated put me off the apps for a while. I was out of a very long-term relationship a few years now and it took me a while to come around to trying dating again. I went in with an open mind, got chatting to, and went on a number of dates with a girl with whom I clicked. We were of similar age. A few dates in, things got physical, and we went back to her place, which wasn't a problem, but it felt fast. We did some stuff, but I held off from the full act as I got the impression she was feeling this was serious, and I wasn't quite there in my head, and didn't wanna lead her on. I did say this and voiced this, and asked if she was sure, as we weren't serious yet. She told me I was overthinking, and she felt the same. She started making passive-aggressive remarks from that point on, that we had to wait until the eighth date for full ***, that I was some born-again Christian, waiting for marriage."

."Matched with someone who seemed completely normal for days — good conversation, shared interests, even voice notes. We finally met in person, and within 10 minutes, I realized the profile photos were at least 10 –15 years old and heavily edited. I tried to be polite and stick it out, but the real kicker was when they spent the entire date complaining about how other people on dating apps were dishonest and shallow. Zero self-awareness. That was the moment I realized dating apps don’t fail because of technology — they fail because people lie to skip the part where you actually earn attraction."
."We matched on Hinge and went to an arcade. We clicked, and we had super easy conversation, and then we hit up a bar after and couldn’t keep our paws off each other. She came back to mine, but we didn’t even do anything ******, just talked and fell asleep. We ended up dating for eight months, but turned out we were just different people. Still, the first date was awesome."
."I matched with a guy on Tinder five years ago. We chatted through the app for a few days. Then I moved, COVID happened, we lost touch, and I deactivated the app. Three years later, I rejoined Tinder, and he was my first match. We went on a date the next day and four more dates that same week. It’s been almost two years, and I’m thanking my lucky stars every day."
."First night I joined Tinder, I started speaking to the only date I went on from it. Together over eight years later, and home owners."
."I met my husband on Tinder. We are about to celebrate three years. You just have to know what you want, hold firm to that, and not settle."

."I encountered a scammer. I thought he seemed too good to be true, but I was enjoying the attention. (We never met; his story was that he was living abroad but couldn’t wait to meet me.) He must have thought he had me good and hooked, because he started asking me for money. Well, my dad didn’t raise an idiot child. I blocked him immediately and reported his profile to the dating app we’d met on."
."I got catfished. I’ve never been catfished by a man. I said so out loud in my head, 'OH MY GOD…' when I saw him walk up. I didn’t want to be an *******, and gave the date a fair chance. The date went well. But I eventually found out his roommate was not only his roommate, but his ex-wife, whom he was still in love with. So strange."
."I went on a third date with someone from Bumble. We had planned a coffee walking date, and it was a gorgeous sunny afternoon. We met at the park, and got on great as we got our coffees, so I jumped in his car when it started raining and expected what would be a chat and drink the rest of our drinks. He whips his willy out mid normal conversation, when we hadn't even kissed yet in all three dates. He said he knew I wanted the ride as I wouldn't have worn those leggings otherwise, that I was being a tease by wearing them. I mean, what else would you wear on a walk? When I got home, I went to block him, and he had already blocked me, like I was the problem. Absolute weirdo."
."I met my husband through Tinder, granted that was 10 years ago, so I don't think it had a premium feature then, and the same with my friend and her husband. Another friend met her husband through Bumble about three years ago. Another two friends have met their significant others through Tinder. Lots of people I work with have met their spouses/partners through Bumble, too. I had some nice dates via Tinder before meeting my husband. They may not have amounted to a relationship, but they were fun, and I met some very decent guys. My friend with the Bumble husband had a similar experience; she just enjoyed the dating experience and got to meet new, different people until a guy that she both enjoyed the company of and wanted the same things in life came along."
"I have two friends who complain about the apps, and honestly, the difference between them and the people who have good dates, start relationships, or just have a good time is absolutely their mindset. They're super negative and also rigid about the 'type' of people they want to date."

."I was chatting to someone, and we were getting along well, or so I thought, when it all got a bit weird. I got a message, 'I’ve decided I like you.' I was delighted, then the person wrote, 'I have something I need to tell you. I love the Hoff. I want you to tie me up and f--- me under my poster of the Hoff while I scream his name, what do you think?' Me 😳 I deleted the account and ran for the hills."
."I went on a 20-hour first date! We met at a Waffle House at 1 a.m., and went ghost hunting to Starbucks and hung out at his place until later that night."
."We matched back in 2017, chatted a bit, and never met up. We ended up in different countries, stayed in touch casually, and joked about being soulmates once or twice. Seven years later, he decided **** it, and booked a flight to my city, and we had a 48-hour first date, seven years after matching. We had a great time together, laughed a lot, and got a little emotional, even. We flew to see each other twice more after that, but we realized that we weren't so compatible. We're on good terms now, and I still think it was one of the best first dates ever."
."Back when Match was more email messaging than just swipes and text, I got a message from a guy who obviously did not mean to message me (nothing he mentioned was on my profile), so I messaged him back saying he messaged the wrong person and best of luck (basically, you’ve got the wrong number) because, hey, maybe the person he was trying to reach out to was going to be his future wife and it was going to be a cute story for them later. He messaged me back, 'Yeah I never would have messaged you, your profile is boring.' Thanks, dude. Last time I try to do anything nice."
."I've commented on this before, but probably when I show up to the date, she's beautiful, seems smart and fun, but then starts talking about politics. Okay, a little weird for a first date on Tinder. She then gets progressively more right-wing. Turns out her dad walks around in an SS hat all day and has a swastika tattoo but 'He's not a Nazi.' She then revealed her plan to get a matching tattoo."
."I just started talking to someone new this week. After a few days of good conversation, I asked her out for this weekend. She excitedly said yes, but then canceled the day before. Over the years, I've had women flake on a first date maybe 5-6 times, and one time I got fully stood up, where she just never showed up, and I never heard from her again. I might have to say, dealing with the occasional flakes is the worst experience I've had using dating apps. I've had a few bad dates, but somehow they bother me less than the flakes. I guess because at least I get a funny story out of the bad dates that I can tell on good dates. I know I've had better luck than most, so I hate to complain at all."

."Weeded through honestly hundreds of men on multiple dating apps. I went on Tinder one day, had some wine, and didn't adjust filters for location. I met my partner, who lived 1.5 hours away in a small town (otherwise would never have found him if I used local filters). We met up one evening, did long-distance 2x week (alternating location) for nearly three years, and have been living together for five years. Both of us have been previously married (partners both cheated, thus divorced), pretty certain we were meant to find each other at this point in our lives. I honestly don't think I'd have found him if I hadn't been on the verge of giving up; neither of us was actually looking for a relationship at that point, as we were both frustrated with dating and not finding someone with a similar mindset. I truly believe it will find you when it's meant to, when you least expect it."
."I'm marrying my first Tinder date, lol. That is admittedly super lucky, so don't stay on them if they start affecting your mental health. But yeah, I met my fiancé on Tinder. We are shockingly similar, to the point where early on, we were both a little worried the other person wasn't fully honest about their opinions, which we now look back at and laugh about. Things have only gotten better since. I was very picky about who I swiped on. I only swiped on people with bios and interests I liked, or at least if I could see some sort of personality I liked in their photos. I think that helped me avoid the worst of it, but I still got a few bad apples. You also have to remember that a lot of dudes swipe right on literally everyone. If you get a match and they don't message or unmatch, just assume they're doing that and don't take it personally."
."I met my fiancé on Tinder almost seven years ago! It wasn't easy tho, I was on the apps on and off for three years, and went on 30+ dates just from Tinder. I don't even know how many people I matched and unmatched with. You will definitely have some disappointing conversations on the apps, or even ones that seem hopeful, only to ghost you randomly. But it is possible to find your person on the apps! It is really a numbers game."
.And lastly, one more time for hope: "My brother and his wife met on a dating app. Best friend and her husband met on a dating app. Another best friend and boyfriend met on a dating app. And none of these people are horrible! They are thriving and great for each other!"
