Paris Jackson revealed that music became a lifeline that helped her survive addiction and eventually achieve sobriety.
She found a “creative outlet” in music that helped her get through some of the darkest periods of her life.
Years of substance abuse also left permanent physical damage. Among them is a perforated septum, a condition involving damage to the nasal septum that has long been associated with cocaine use through snorting.
Jackson, an actress, singer and model, is the daughter of the late Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe. She recently celebrated six years of sobriety. In her beauty vlog, the 28-year-old singer and songwriter explained that writing songs helped her find purpose long before she stopped drinking and using drugs.
Her latest confession comes after she revealed that she has a “hole” in her nasal septum.
She decided not to undergo surgery to “repair” the septum, mainly because she feared she would have to use strong pain medication during recovery. That, she believes, could potentially trigger a return to addictive behavior.
In her new vlog, she said:
"Music was kind of the only thing that got me through the hard times before I got sober, was music. When I got sober, it helped me be like, 'Oh wow, music really is everything. It really is like the air I breathe."
She admitted that she resisted pursuing a career in music, despite believing it was what she was meant to do. For a long time, she pushed it aside, saying music was just a hobby, even though she was already playing guitar extensively at the age of 13 or 14.
She spoke openly about her addiction in May when she appeared on Jack Osbourne’s podcast “Trying Not to Die.” During the interview, she discussed how addiction changed her behavior and the way she viewed life.
Paris, who is very close to her brothers Prince and Bigi Jackson, admitted during Osbourne’s podcast that she spent years hating herself.
"'Oh, I may be a liar, a cheater, a thief, whatever, but I do have a moral compass, like, I was raised right in that way. What happens when I drink is that goes away. That goes right out the window and I become a very vindictive person."
She also reflected on emotional struggles she faced long before drugs and alcohol became part of her life.
