Padres likely to trade Mason Miller, & 3 teams make the most sense as favorites

Padres likely to trade Mason Miller, & 3 teams make the most sense as favorites

Mason Miller is the most prized RP on the trade market this season, and 1 of these 3 teams are likely to land him

The San Diego Padres could be one of the most fascinating teams to watch ahead of the MLB trade deadline. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, rival executives believe the Padres will take an unconventional approach by buying and selling at the same time, with electric closer Mason Miller emerging as one of the club’s most likely trade candidates.

Because Miller is under team control through the 2029 season, his value may be higher than that of almost any reliever available on the market. While nearly every contender could use a dominant bullpen arm, three teams stand out as the most logical landing spots.

The Yankees have been vocal about wanting to strengthen the back end of their bullpen. Although they have a great closer in David Bednar, adding another elite late-inning reliever would give New York one of the most intimidating relief corps in baseball heading into October.

Perhaps more importantly, the Yankees possess a number of big-name prospects, so they have the capital necessary to meet San Diego’s asking price. With World Series expectations every season, acquiring a controllable reliever like Miller would make plenty of sense.

Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia’s need for bullpen help became even greater after Brad Keller was lost for the remainder of the season. The Phillies have already been connected to relief pitching in trade rumors, and adding Miller would give them another dominant arm alongside Jhoan Duran.

A playoff-caliber bullpen can shorten games dramatically, and Miller’s elite velocity and strikeout ability would immediately strengthen Philadelphia’s championship aspirations.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates may be the team that makes the most sense. Pittsburgh has remained firmly in the National League playoff race despite experiencing inconsistent late-inning relief throughout much of the season. Unlike many teams, the Pirates are rarely aggressive when it comes to acquiring rental players. That’s what makes Miller such an attractive target.

Because he remains under team control for three more seasons after this one, Pittsburgh wouldn’t be making a short-term investment. Instead, the Pirates would be acquiring a controllable cornerstone for both this year’s playoff push and future seasons.

Miller Would Command a Massive Return

The Padres won’t move Mason Miller cheaply. Elite relievers with multiple years of club control are among the most valuable trade assets in baseball, and San Diego would undoubtedly demand a significant package of young talent in return.

Whether it’s the Yankees, Phillies, Pirates, or another surprise contender, Miller’s market should be one of the most competitive storylines leading up to the trade deadline. If the Padres truly plan to buy and sell simultaneously, Mason Miller could become the biggest bullpen name available—and one of the most impactful players traded before the deadline.
