(KRON) — Summer break is nearing an end, and students in Oakland can expect a major change when they head back to school. They will not be allowed to use their cell phones during school hours.

For the 2026-2027 school year, the Oakland Unified School District will impose a mandate that requires all students to put their phones away during school hours. Elementary school students will be required to put their phones in a lock box, while middle and high school students will put their phones in a locked pouch that they can carry with them. The pouches will be unlocked upon school dismissal.

The school district says if there is a serious health or safety emergency, students will be able to access their device. If a family needs to immediately contact their student, the district says they should call the school directly.

The Oakland Board of Education voted in June to make all day, every day, in every school completely cell phone free for all students. They say this is in an effort to eliminate distractions as many students are playing with their phones rather than paying attention in class. They also say phones and social media can create conflict between students.

The first day of school is August 10.
