The Detroit Lions are entering training camp with a plethora of needs, including edge rusher. Outside of Aidan Hutchinson, who should return as one of the top edge defenders in the NFL after a 14.5-sack campaign in 2025, the Lions lack dependable pass-rushing options.
After losing Al-Quadin Muhammad to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency, Detroit signed DJ Wonnum and drafted Derrick Moore in Round 2 to replace the veteran. Muhammad had a breakout season in 2025 with 11 sacks, establishing himself as a high-level complementary pass rush opposite Hutchinson.
Wonnum and Moore could emerge as valuable pieces in Detroit's edge rusher group, but general manager Brad Holmes needs to add another dynamic force on the defensive line to elevate the Lions into Super Bowl contention, and he could make a trade with the Arizona Cardinals to accomplish this task.
Lions should explore a trade for Josh Sweat
Sweat has been involved in trade rumors this offseason, as reports surfaced that the Cardinals were listening to offers for the Super Bowl champion after he wasn't in attendance for the team's offseason activities.
However, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport shut down any trade talks surrounding Sweat, stating that Arizona isn't moving him. A few days later, Sweat reported to mandatory minicamp, which quieted trade discussions even more.
Though Sweat looks to be committed to playing in Arizona this year, it doesn't make much sense for a rebuilding squad like the Cardinals to hold on to an expensive veteran. Arizona could be willing to move the 29-year-old for the right price, and the Lions must look into his market.
Sweat would be an ideal fit as the No. 2 edge rusher on Kelvin Sheppard's defense. The 2021 Pro Bowler has posted at least six sacks in each of the last six seasons, including a career-high of 12 in 2025. Sweat was a pivotal part of the Philadelphia Eagles' 2024 championship team, and his play that year earned him a four-year, $76 million contract with the Cardinals.
The Lions reportedly had interest in signing Sweat in free agency last offseason, so why not revisit the possibility of acquiring him? Hutchinson and Sweat would form one of the most dominant edge rusher duos in the league, as both players provide the perfect blend of pass-rushing explosiveness, run-stuffing prowess, and postseason experience.
A Day 2 pick would likely be the starting cost for Sweat, but the Cardinals may seek more compensation as well. Detroit would have to pay a steep price for the Florida State product, but it would be well worth it, as Sweat could be the missing piece that elevates the Lions into one of the top contenders for the Super Bowl, and Holmes can't pass on an opportunity like that.
