When pondering the most entertaining action-thriller movies ever made, we can see that masterful Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo has no shortage of legitimate candidates. Woo reached a creative pinnacle in the 1980s when he blew audiences away with highly stylized, over-the-top action thrillers such as A Better Tomorrow and The Killer. In the 1990s, he continued to hone his chops and deliver explosive, ultra-violent action in Hard Boiled and Hard Target. Proving that the third time is the charm, Woo's wonderful 1997 movie is one of his all-time best and is now free to watch on YouTube.
I'll never forget when, during my "Techno-thrillers" film course in college, Nicolas Cage attended a lecture to introduce Face/Off, Woo's excessively violent and extremely enthralling action-thriller co-starring John Travolta. Boasting one of the wildest concepts on record, the story of an FBI agent exacting revenge by physically swapping his face with a terrorist harks back to a time when Hollywood encouraged risky, original storytelling that paid off with critical success and mainstream appeal.
'Face/Off Remains John Woo's Best English-Language Action Thriller
In his third English-language film after Hard Target and Broken Arrow,Hong Kong action-movie maven John Woo blasted audiences into another stratosphere with Face/Off in 1997. The absurd plot centers on FBI Agent Sean Archer (Travolta), who concocts one of the most elaborate revenge schemes after a family member is killed by the ruthless terrorist Castor Troy (Cage). To execute his vendetta, Archer agrees to undergo a radical new surgical procedure to swap his face, vocal tone, and bodily appearance with Troy. He goes deep undercover to find the location of a bomb Troy planted somewhere in L.A. before his arrest.
Tasked with impersonating each other's unique performing styles, Travolta and Cage's amusingly histronic turns are on par with Woo's over-the-top violence and riveting action set-pieces. Those who are familiar with The Killer and Hard Boiled know how adroit Woo is at choreographing wildly vivid, slow-motion shootouts and savagely gruesome death scenes with elegance. Woo ensures the visceral action is always fast-paced, demands your undivided attention, and never lets it go. There's also a silly sense of humor pervading the movie, which adds immense entertainment value.
Face/Off is a risk-taking virtue that emboldens original storytelling rather than a safe, risk-averse adaptation of a popular IP.It's a reminder of the kinds of movies Hollywood used to make. With a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score and a $246 million box office haul, Face/Off has become a bona fide cult classic in the past 30 years and is now considered among Woo's best work. Since 2019, there have even been discussions about a sequel.
'Face/Off 2' Continues to Linger in Development
In 2019, Paramount announced its desire to make a Face/Off sequel with a brand-new cast. At the time, producer Neal Moritz (Sonic the Hedgehog) and writer Oren Uziel (Spider-Noir) were attached to the project. By February 2021, Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) was hired to direct, with his longtime writing partner Simon Barrett on board. However, it was announced in February 2026 that Wingard and Barrett were no longer involved with a Face/Off sequel, and they focused their attention on the upcoming horror thriller Onslaught.
Now, the search is on for a new director for Paramount's Face/Off sequel. While the obvious choice would be John Woo, the venerated filmmaker is coming off a string of flops, including 2023's Silent Night and the unnecessary 2024 remake of The Killer. Not to play a Hollywood producer, but if Woo isn't interested, I'd personally recruit Na Hong-jin, the talented Korean filmmaker who made the horror movie The Wailinga decade ago, and whose ambitious new sci-fi-action-thriller Hope will blow audiences away in September 2026.
Regardless of what transpires with the planned Face/Off sequel, nothing can ever take away from the sheer unbridled mania of Woo's original. Few action-thrillers are as dynamic and kinetically charged as Face/Off, with Woo's stylized aesthetic and the two lead performances as bonkers as the premise itself.
