Catherine Zeta-Jones is in the middle of one of the more interesting third acts in Hollywood. The Oscar-winning star's turn as Morticia Addams in Netflix's Wednesdayreintroduced her to an audience that may have been too young for Chicago (2002). She has kept the momentum going on the film side as well, having joined Anthony Hopkins in D.J. Caruso's A Visit to Grandpa's, which began filming earlier this year. Now, she is set to lead a new television series entirely on her own shoulders.
AMC Global Media's streamer AMC+ has secured the exclusive U.S. rights to Kill Jackie, the revenge thriller series starring and executive produced by Catherine Zeta-Jones. The eight-episode project is set to premiere on AMC+ this fall. Prime Video commissioned the series last year and took rights in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Canada, Austria, and Switzerland, which left U.S. viewers as the last major audience without a confirmed platform. That has now changed, as the star-driven thriller is now at home alongside AMC's prestige genre lineup.
The premise gives Zeta-Jones the kind of role that has increasingly become a strong lane for veteran stars. She plays a woman (Jackie Prince) who has spent the past 20 years living quietly as a wealthy art dealer after leaving behind a criminal past. Her life begins to unravel when a group of assassins known as the Seven Demons are sent after her. Instead of disappearing, Jackie decides to strike first. Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios, told Deadline:
"Kill Jackie is a standout addition to AMC+'s curated slate of premium scripted content, and a great example of the bold, character-driven storytelling for which we are known. Catherine Zeta-Jones commands the screen with a magnetic leading performance, and we're thrilled to be working with her and the entire producing team to bring this daring, dark, comedic thriller to U.S. audiences."
The series is based on The Price You Pay, Nick Harkaway's 2018 novel written under the pen name Aidan Truhen. The book is better known for its fast-talking voice than the grim self-seriousness often associated with assassin stories. The adaptation also makes one notable change: it gender-swaps the lead character, who is named Jack Price in the novel.
There is one more detail that gives the project a personal angle. Filming took place in Bilbao, Lisbon, London, and Swansea — the city where Zeta-Jones grew up. Between this project and her Dylan Thomas adaptation with Anthony Hopkins, the Welsh star seems to be steering this stage of her career, at least in part, back toward home.
