The SEC is moving to a nine-game conference schedule this upcoming college football season.
This change improves each team’s strength of schedule, but also opens the door for more potential losses.
Earlier this week, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz said SEC coaches are already regretting the move to a nine-game conference schedule. The Tigers’ program leader added that LSU head coach Lane Kiffin agrees, believing the expanded schedule leaves the conference at a disadvantage.
When asked about the switch to a nine-game conference schedule on Wednesday, first-year Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall offered a different perspective.
“I’m not going to whine and complain about being an SEC head football coach,” Sumrall said, via college football insider Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports.
Sumrall and the Gators will open up their 2026 season schedule with back-to-back non-conference matchups against the Florida Atlantic Owls and Campbell Camels. Then, the program will play nine consecutive SEC matchups before facing off against the ACC’s Florida State Seminoles to close out the regular season on Nov. 27.
Sumrall led the Tulane Green Wave to an 11-3 record last season. Two of the program’s three losses came against the Ole Miss Rebels, including a 41-10 loss in the opening round of the College Football Playoff.
