While Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding made headlines at SEC media days for his rant about tampering in college football, he also gave an interesting answer about how he kept quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy from following Lane Kiffin to LSU.
Golding's quote was targeted at Kiffin, but more through the lens of creating a legacy at Ole Miss and what it would mean for the players' future, per ESPN's David Hale.
"Football's gonna end. What are you going to use? You gotta use an alumni base to be able to get you a job. Where are you gonna bring your kids to? What jersey are they wearing?
Y'all two created a legacy in one season that's gonna be hard for anybody to overtake, and for what's going on now, for Coach Kiffin to leave — go Google Lane Kiffin. I had them both do it in my office. Google Lane Kiffin, the dude they'd have built a statue of here three days ago. Google his name right now. They wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.
They'll do the same thing to y'all to [if you leave]. But if you come out and say I'm going to continue to build on the legacy I've created, what that's going to do for you and this fan base and the alumni for the rest of your life, I don't give a s*** where you go or what they pay you, you'll never amount to that much."
The Ole Miss head coach also said during his media session that he and coach Kiffin are on good terms, but you can't help but laugh at Golding's framing used in a teaching moment for his players.
Kiffin had the Rebels in their best season in program history, eyeing the College Football Playoff. When he opted to leave the program for LSU, the fan base turned on him in an instant.
Golding's message was a good one underneath the dig. He was hoping to get Chambliss and Lacy to realize they are crafting a legacy at Ole Miss, and that football will eventually end, so they need to be thinking about the rest of their lives.
The message worked as both Chambliss — who was granted an extra year of eligibility — and Lacy opted to stay at Ole Miss for the 2026 season.
Golding, Chambliss and Lacy will get to reunite with Kiffin on Saturday, Sept. 19, when the two teams begin conference play.
