KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - An Ohio man is facing several charges after he allegedly tried to break into a Knoxville bank and a drug store early Monday morning.
According to warrants obtained by WVLT News, officers went to Mountain Commerce Bank on Kingston Pike about a potential attempted break in at around 1 a.m. There, the bank manager said employees who arrived at the bank saw two smashed windows and a broken door with blood on the ground below it.
Employees on the scene said nothing had been stolen but noted a “small boulder” had been thrown into the building in addition to damage to the gutters and cement footing where a bush had been ripped out of the ground, causing about $15,000 in damages, the warrants said.
While officers were on the scene, the manager of a nearby Walgreens flagged them down and said a man, later identified by a dropped wallet as 25-year-old Daniel Kalinsky, of Ashtabula, Ohio, had been caught on camera at around the same time “trying to pry the front entrance” open" and damaging gutters and store windows, causing around $5,000 in damages.
Warrants said Kalinsky had been arrested about an hour after the incidents at the bank and Walgreens at a CVS across the street for public intoxication and resisting arrest. At the time of his arrest, he “was noted to have glass fragments in his hand and was heavily bleeding.” He was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment before being taken in as an inmate.
Kalinsky was charged with two counts of attempted burglary and two counts of vandalism in addition to the previously mentioned charges of public intoxication and resisting arrest.
