Officials responding to ammonia leak at Alabama plant, 4 treated

First responders are on the scene Wednesday morning at a Tyson Foods plant in Gadsden investigating an ammonia leak.

The City of Gadsden announced through social media that first responders are assisting in the incident at the Steele Station Road plant.

According to the city, an ammonia leak was reported and contained at the plant earlier this morning.

Gadsden Fire is conducting on-site evaluations. By this afternoon, fire officials said 134 employees were evacuated, and four people were treated at local hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

City transportation vehicles moved employees off site to Church of the Highlands, while police directed traffic in the area.

“We are pleased to report that the leak was contained, and the incident was managed safely through the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies,” the fire department announced.

AMED Ambulance Service, Gadsden Regional Medical Center and Riverview Regional Medical Center, the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office and Etowah EMA assisted.

Efforts to reach Tyson for comment were not immediately successful.
