Matt Damon called bestie Ben Affleck when he landed the lead role in The Odyssey because of course he did.
The Saving Private Ryan actor admitted that though he tried to get in touch with wife Luciana Barroso to tell her about his casting as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s epic, he had to phone a friend instead, telling Affleck the news first.
“So, I immediately called my wife who was on a Zoom, and so she couldn’t pick up and I called Ben Affleck,” Damon revealed during a joint interview with Tom Holland on 100 Questions With Tom Simons.
As for Affleck’s reaction? “He freaked out,” Damon shared.
“I was on the phone with him for about a half an hour and they were at the office in L.A. and then I hung up with him and a minute later my wife texted, like, ‘Why didn’t you tell me first?’” Damon said.
“Ben had run into her office to tell her,” Damon clarified about the good news traveling fast. As for Holland, he told his wife Zendaya first upon landing his role as Telemachus, adding that Nolan is her “favorite director.”
Bromances aside, Damon gushed about Barroso, whom he has been married to since 2005 and shares four daughters with, ahead of The Odyssey premiere. “There’s a lot of love and respect underneath the relationship, and a lot of trust,” Damon told PEOPLE.
“It’s built on a very sturdy foundation. We continue to grow and evolve as people, and so that foundation’s really everything," he added.

Damon also mentioned that they’ve been able to successfully mix their personal and professional lives. “She’s been a part of that for me since I’ve known her. She reads everything I’m doing. She looks at cuts of movies. I’ve really relied on her notes for 23 years,” he said.
Damon previously praised his Good Will Hunting collaborator in a MTV UK interview where he and his Odyssey costars played a game of "Who Even Am I?"
“Look at that dashing picture of him. He’s really giving Blue Steel in that one,” Damon said while holding a photo of Affleck, calling out Ben Stiller’s signature pose as Zoolander.
“We’ve been through a whole hell of a lot together, and he’s one of the great loves of my life, I will say about Ben,” Damon added, reflecting on their 45 years of friendship together.
The Odyssey is now in theaters.
