Since 2010, young readers have loved the Pete the Cat picture books—which later inspired a years-long popular animated series of the same name—and now, creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat, James Dean, is teaming up with the hunger relief organization Feeding America to tackle an issue that becomes particularly pressing in the summer months: Childhood hunger.
While childhood hunger certainly isn't siloed to the summer season, this year-round problem becomes even more concerning this time of year because many children lose access to the school-provided meals that they had relied on throughout the school year. In an effort to help these children, estimated to be in the millions nationwide, Feeding America and Pete the Cat/James Dean are teaming up to create a free, downloadable Summer Action Plan.
The plan includes myriad fun activities for kids, comprising things like stories, drawings and word searches, to help children understand hunger in an age-appropriate way while learning about critical concepts like kindness, empathy and community.
Additionally, this partnership includes a fundraiser with Team Feed, Feeding America's fundraising community, which offers the opportunity for individuals to create customized virtual food drives that they can share within their communities. Pete the Cat and Dean's Teem Feed is live now and highlights Dean's personal connection to the issue of childhood hunger, as he shares that, growing up, his family "relied on government assistance to help put food on the table."
As shared in an Instagram post by Feeding America and Pete the Cat, those who donate will be entered to win one of twenty signed copies of a Pete the Cat book or original Pete the Cat artwork by Dean; however, a donation is not necessary to enter the giveaway. Instructions on how to enter can be found on Dean's Team Feed page.
