The Knicks are keeping Jose Alvarado for three more years, and this is exactly the kind of move a champion should make. It is not the biggest contract on the roster. It might still be one of the most useful.
Alvarado declined his $4.5 million player option and is expected to sign a three-year deal worth more than $14 million. New York made the deal official after acquiring him from New Orleans during the season.
He was not brought in to replace Jalen Brunson. He was brought in to make life harder for the other team’s point guard, pressure the ball, and give the second unit a little edge. The Knicks got eight points and three assists from him in the fourth quarter of their Game 4 Finals comeback against San Antonio.
Knicks kept the part of Alvarado that travels
The Brooklyn native has a role that does not depend on being hot from three. He can pick up full court, chase a loose ball, and turn a quiet possession into something the crowd feels. That matters in the regular season, when a title team needs players who can keep the game from getting flat.
The NBA player page puts his recent production in context. The numbers are modest, but the Knicks did not pay him to be a high-volume scorer. They paid for defense, pressure, and a guard who is comfortable playing next to Brunson or leading the bench group.
The contract also keeps the local connection alive. Alvarado attended Christ the King High School, returned to New York in February, and became part of a title team almost immediately. Fans attach to players like that quickly.
The money is manageable, the minutes are not automatic
The Knicks still have to sort out their backcourt. Landry Shamet is back on a long deal, Jordan Clarkson returned, and Miles McBride remains part of the rotation. Alvarado cannot play heavy minutes simply because the contract is new.
That setup is fine. The Knicks can use him in matchups where the opposing guard needs to be bothered. They can pair him with Brunson when they want more pressure at the point of attack. They can also sit him when the offense needs size and shooting.
I like this deal for New York. Alvarado gives the Knicks some personality, but the bigger point is that his game fits playoff basketball. The Knicks have to keep the role tight and the spacing workable. If they do, this is a good piece of the title defense.
