Ever since PlayStation announced that any game released in 2028 or later will not get a physical disc release, the internet has been in chaos. Not only are collectors and gamers shocked about the full switch to digital media, but retailers are also pushing against Sony. Even Nier: Automata director Yoko Taro mourns the end of PlayStation discs in a recent post on X.

“Personally, I can’t help but feel sad about physical media disappearing, but I suppose it’s just the flow of the times,” Taro said in his post.

“I thought that holding the reins on physical distribution itself is an advantage compared to Steam and the like, so even if digital downloads are pushed forward, a future like only high-priced limited editions behind physical (like CD distribution) would come. Missed the mark, too bad.”

Taro wrote this statement in a retweet on his own post, where he showed off his physical copy of Hi-Fi Rush, and urged players to get their hands on the actual game discs while they still could.

The initial post read: “With the recent buzz about the PS5 discontinuing physical media production, we’ve received Hi-Fi RUSH from our last hope, Super Deluxe-san! Don’t assume your parents and physical media will always be there, so if you’re interested, be sure to check it out.”
