The new Avengers: Doomsday trailer is here with a brand-new look at the film’s massive ensemble cast – and giving Marvel Studios hopes they will bring butts back into theater seats. The footage throws a relentless barrage at our senses, packing in everything from blink-and-you’ll-miss-it hero team-ups and ominous, high-stakes dialogue to a much clearer picture of how the broader Marvel Multiverse is finally crashing together.
It kicks off with a return to the Fox universe’s X-Mansion, where a chilling voice-over immediately sets the mood. Patrick Stewart’s Professor X peers nervously through a window at a blinding threat looming outside, while James Marsden officially suits up once again as Cyclops. Rocking his familiar, comic-accurate blue-and-yellow suit, Marsden readies a lethal optic blast the moment he senses an intruder creeping down the corridor.
The clip then pivots to Chris Hemsworth’s “triumphant” return as Thor. Sporting short hair again and gripping Stormbreaker, the god of thunder appears to be stepping into a leadership role – likely out of sheer desperation. As he rallies the troops, Thor takes on the daunting task of warning them about the unthinkable power they’re up against.

True to form for one of Marvel’s ultimate S-tier villains, Doctor Doom (Robert Downey, Jr.) is hyped through Thor’s battle-weary narration as the single greatest threat the Odinson has ever encountered. Doom promptly proves it by casually halting a full-force strike from Stormbreaker with a single hand.
With existence itself hanging in the balance, a desperate Thor scrambles to assemble an alliance. He recruits the Fantastic Four, Namor (Tenoch Huerta), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Falcon Cap (Anthony Mackie), and Wakandan royalty Shuri (Letitia Wright) and M’Baku (Winston Duke).
They, Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) stand out as key players, but the trailer’s wildest fan-service comes in quick, kinetic shots of Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) sparring with Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and a returning OG Mystique (Rebecca Romijn) battling Yelena (Florence Pugh).
The standout crowd-pleaser ought to be when Thor crosses paths with a youthful Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who proves he is still worthy by yanking Mjolnir straight out of the thunder god’s hand. Unfortunately, because Marvel already blew the big reveal in a standalone Rogers teaser, the reunion loses a chunk of its emotional punch. It’s a classic case of marketing undercutting the main event, even if seeing the two original Avengers share the screen again still delivers a brief hit of pure nostalgia.
The trailer offers a few hits of nostalgia with mixed effect. Kevin Feige and Marvel are banking on Doomsday being a potent shot of adrenaline for the MCU. It may turn out to be that, but they still have a lot of work to do to rebuild trust with their audience and overcome comic book fatigue that keeps plaguing their box office chances.
And they only have a few months left to do that. Avengers: Doomsday brings an apocalyptic event to theaters on December 18th.
