City Council, others get pay bump
Last week, the New York City Council passed a bill that would give some of the city's most notable politicians, including themselves, pay increases. This would be the first raise since 2016.
The 18.2% increase was passed, raising the salaries of council members, borough presidents, district attorneys and other citywide officials - including Mamdani.
So, how much does Mamdani make?
Mamdani makes a salary of about $258,750 a year as mayor.
The raise would bring his income up to around $305,800 if he accepted the raise.
Why did Mamdani turn down a raise?
At a press conference, Mamdani told reporters he would be turning down a pay hike.
“I haven’t knocked on anyone’s door in New York City and they’ve said that their concern is that the mayor makes too little," Mamdani said. “I will not accept a pay raise."
He said he'd rather see it "go to the pockets of those who are struggling in the city."
Speaker Julie Menin also declined the pay raise.
