With its launch in Germany, Leo Express is pursuing a major goal: The Czech rail provider aims to connect cities in Western and Eastern Europe more closely. The new route from Frankfurt through Prague to Poland, spanning more than 1,300 kilometers, is one of the longest direct connections in Europe. It links metropolises, cultural cities, and key economic centers along a single route.

Just in time for the start of summer, Leo Express transported passengers between Frankfurt and Prague for the first time at the end of June this year. The black-and-orange trains travel from Frankfurt Airport and Frankfurt-South via Leipzig and Dresden directly to the Czech capital. The travel time is about ten hours—without any transfers. At the market launch, the Czechs advertised tickets starting at 9.90 euros. Prices now typically range from about 17.90 euros for an economy class seat to around 25 euros in business class, depending on the travel day and occupancy. Those wishing to spend the night on the train can book a bed in the sleeper car starting at 37.50 euros. In addition to mixed compartments, there are also special compartments for women and children.

Cheaper Than DB–Even Within Germany

Even though the introductory prices have become rare, Leo Express remains a cost-effective alternative to Deutsche Bahn on many routes.

Leo Express can also be an interesting alternative for trips within Germany. The Frankfurt-Dresden route is sometimes up to 50 percent cheaper with the Czech provider than with the ICE, though it takes three hours longer.

Prague as a Gateway to Eastern Europe

For many travelers, Prague is likely the main reason to board the new train. The Czech capital, with its old town, Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle, is one of the most popular city destinations in Central Europe. But the journey doesn’t have to end there.

The new connection is part of a significantly larger network. Leo Express connects Prague with numerous other cities in Central and Eastern Europe. Particularly exciting are the connections to Poland and Slovakia. Through the network, cities such as Krakow, Warsaw, and Bratislava can be reached. This opens up new possibilities for vacationers for city trips and tours that connect multiple countries.

Europe Comes Closer Together by Rail

The connection from Frankfurt to Prague is not an isolated case. New international rail offerings are emerging elsewhere as well. A current example is the new direct connection between Prague, Berlin, and Copenhagen, which has been in operation since mid-June. From Berlin, travelers can reach the Danish capital in about 7 hours.

The project is jointly operated by Deutsche Bahn, Czech Railways, and the Danish State Railways. Travelers can thus travel between three European capitals without transfers. The route is considered the first successfully implemented EU pilot project for new cross-border rail connections and aims to further strengthen international rail travel in Europe.

This idyll is hidden in what is considered Germany’s toughest neighborhood.

Karl-Marx-Straße and Sonnenallee embody the urban, dense, and international Berlin like few other places.
