A new app will help Broome County residents stay up to date with emergency announcements, ensuring locals remain informed and aware of problems in the area.
The Ready Broome mobile app, announced in a July 21 press conference, is officially available for download on Apple and Android devices. The app will send users push notifications with emergency alerts from the Broome County Office of Emergency Services and National Weather Service.
The app's release comes amid weeks of severe weather warnings, with poor air quality due to Canadian wildfires, severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings.
Users will have access to safety information, updates on power outages and traffic and roadway information. According to Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, the app is a tool residents can use to ensure they stay updated on emergency situations throughout the county.
"The app is about making it easier for people to stay informed before, during and after emergencies," said Garnar. "It puts important information right in your pocket. Our goal is pretty straightforward — we want folks to have reliable information when they need it most."
The app's uses extend beyond just emergencies, according to Deputy Director of Emergency Services Neal Haight. Haight said the app will also feature a comprehensive directory of county services, allowing users to find the right contact for their questions at the county level.
Haight also said the app can help residents with critical information, including a map, which was used to illustrate bottled water and dry ice distribution centers on July 20. Users can download Ready Broome on the App Store or Google Play store on their mobile device.
