Survival games like Minecraftand Rust are a dime a dozen nowadays, which can make standing out amongst the rabble a little challenging. Even should a new survival title manage to deliver groundbreaking gameplay and stunning visuals, it isn't guaranteed success, at least not immediately, as it still lingers in the shadows of those aforementioned titles and others that had the great fortune of releasing in the era of untapped survival game potential: the 2010s. It is a shame, but a symptom of 1000s of video games releasing on an alarmingly frequent basis.
However, even the most diehard fans of some of the greatest survival games of all time still want something new; so, occasionally, a new title manages to break into the zeitgeist and deliver an experience that pushes the genre in a new direction or delivers familiar comforts for a low price. Fortunately, a brand-new open-world zombie survival title looks set to be such a game, one that, should it play its cards right, will break into the mainstream and offer fans something new. At the very least, it'll give Minecraft and Rust fans something to discuss ad nauseam.
Zeverland is the latest game attempting to dethrone the very best zombie games of all time and dominate the genre. The debut title from developer Quantum Quirks is an open-world PvE title in which players can either band together or face the zombie horde alone as they explore an enormous map, build bases, gather materials, and attempt to survive. It may all sound a little familiar, especially to veterans of the genre, but Zeverland is aiming to be something a little different.
Firstly, it features Minecraft-esque building, in which players can place down blocks to construct just about anything. Need a new wall made or a sign to let other survivors know where you are? You can build it. Similarly, likely inspired by the likes of Dead Island or Dying Light, players can combine any two items to create unique weapons, such as a DSLR strapped to a bat that dishes out electrical-based damage upon impact.
Zeverland's focus on freedom and imagination is what Quantum Quirks is hoping will help it stand out and ultimately make it the next best game like Minecraft, and, it may just be working, as the developer announced it already has over 300,000 wishlists on Steam. There are other, more familiar mechanics, such as hiring NPCs to automate resource gathering and item construction, which gives it a little bit of a Palworld flair, as well as the ability to create a vaccine and maybe even save the world.
Zeverland doesn't have a confirmed release date, with its Steam store page simply listing it coming soon. However, it recently held its second pre-alpha tech test (it concluded on July 2, 2026), which allowed players to try out the available content and offer feedback. For those interested in signing up for any potential future playtests, be sure to wishlist Zeverland. Of course, it remains to be seen whether Zeverland manages to reach the same heights as Minecraft or Rust, but with its focus on freedom, it certainly feels like its harkening back to the early days of the survival genre.
