Warning: The following contains spoilers for Black Clover chapter #392!
Despite facing the uphill battle of creating a satisfying ending after shifting to a quarterly magazine, Yuki Tabata landed the plane with Black Clover's ending. The series finale was carefully set up with a thrilling finale as the Clover Kingdom and its allies staved off its greatest existential threat in Judgment Day. While many survived to tell the tale, the fight wasn't without a major casualty or two, particularly leaving an open question by chapter 389: who is meant to become the Wizard King?
But truthfully, Black Clover's ending ties off multiple ends despite its final set of chapters, in which it settles Asta and Yuno's rivalry and props up a healthy epilogue answering many, but crucially not all, questions fans may still have. It pretty clearly lays out many of the romantic pairings, including one or two creative choices which weren't unanimously well-received across the fandom. But crucially, Black Clover ended on Tabata's terms without dragging itself out too far, with an optimistic future ahead now that the main manga is over.
How Black Clover Sets Up the Battle Between Asta and Yuno
Black Clover chapter #390 reveals that the captains of the magic squads couldn't decide who should become the new Wizard King between Asta and Yuno. William supported Yuno and Yami backed Asta, but in the end, they concluded that a duel between the two was the best way to avoid any hard feelings. With the crowd divided between supporting one or the other, the duel begins with Asta and Yuno clashing using their special forms, Devil Union and Spirit Dive. Yuno's magic power is so dense that it can withstand Asta's anti-magic, yet he still prefers to use ranged attacks.
Asta relies on his ki and quick reflexes and becomes a battle of attrition where he dodges Yuno's endless barrage of attacks. Asta's progress is evident in the fact that he's now able to summon the swords from the grimoire and control them remotely like Liebe, and he has also overcome his weakness to physical attacks, being able to break a giant boulder with his fist using zetten. Asta strikes Yuno directly, who, despite using his last bit of mana, ends up cornered. Yuno accepts Asta's victory, and he thanks him for helping him continue fighting for his dream.
Although both had similar merits in the war, there's no doubt that Yuno had a certain advantage in becoming the Wizard King. He had a better military position, having risen to vice-captain and later captain of the Golden Dawn; greater popularity; and he was in line with the kingdom's traditions, coming from a high social class. While Asta was initially badly treated due to his demonic powers, he managed to stand on equal footing with Yuno and win in the end.
What Happens to Yuno and Noelle in Black Clover
Black Clover Chapter #392 fast-forwards two years, showing the characters' lives on the day of a new Magic Knights entrance exam. Yuno, who officially became the captain of the Golden Dawn after William gave him the position in chapter #355, tells Klaus Lunettes, who appears to be the new vice-captain, that he's just returned from the Spade Kingdom. This suggests that Yuno is actively fulfilling his duties as the Crown Prince of the Spade Kingdom without neglecting his responsibilities as squad captain. He also tells Klaus that he is looking for new, determined members who can surpass him.
Meanwhile, Noelle is discussing with Mimosa how no one deserves to be the Wizard King more than Asta, implying that she decided not to confess her feelings until now because he was busy adjusting to his new position. Noelle mentions that she's having lunch with her siblings, and later there's a panel where she, Nozel, Nebra, and Solid Silva are sitting at a table chatting happily. That means the sibling's relationship improved after the battle against the paladin Acier, and they are now much closer, so Noelle obtained the family love she always longed for.
What Happens To Each Member of the Black Bulls
There were many changes within the Black Bulls besides Asta leaving the team to become the Wizard King. Yami Sukehiro, who kept Adramelech as his familiar, decided to step down as captain to avoid having to work for Asta, whom he still sees as a brat. The position went to vice-captain Nacht Faust, who seemed miserable trying to control the Black Bulls' chaos. It wasn't confirmed who the new vice-captain is, but it's possible it's Vanessa, whom he unsuccessfully asks for help with his work.
Black Clover's finale shows Magna and Luck fighting and testing Zora's new trap magic, Gordon and Henry playing cards, Gauche and Gray accompanying Mary before her Magic Knight exam, Charmy and Finral in their new roles as parents, and Nero remembering Lumiere while happily observing the peace of the kingdom.
Black Clover Ends Without Resolving the Series' Love Triangle
One of the most anticipated developments for fans was whether Asta would end up with Noelle or Mimosa. However, the Black Clover finale didn't show Asta with either of them. Instead, Noelle and Mimosa reaffirmed their determination not to give up and to compete to see who could win his heart.
While this might seem like an easy way out for the author to avoid choosing a ship and upsetting fans, it's been less than three years since the final battle in the series' timeline. Asta is only 21 years old, so he still has time to choose a partner. Furthermore, he hasn't been seen trying to win over Sister Lily again, so it's fair to say that Noelle and Mimosa might finally have a chance.
Every Confirmed Couple in Black Clover's Finale
Although Asta's hips didn't become canon, Black Clover confirmed one of the most developed couples throughout the series: Yami and Charlotte. In the finale, Charlotte has a flashback to Ichika's sendoff before she returns to Hino Country. Ichika calls Charlotte "elder sister," revealing that she and Yami are officially dating. Charlotte is embarrassed and says they aren't married or anything, but Yami tells her that he has his sights set on the future.
Since Sol asks Charlotte about her "hubby Yami" in the finale, it suggests they are already married by the last time jump. Furthermore, Mary mocks Gauche by telling him that no one but Grey would love someone obsessed with his sister like him, to which he becomes embarrassed, which could confirm that they are dating. Finral and Finesse also got married and are expecting a child. However, the biggest surprise might be Charmy, who gave up on chasing Yuno and married Rill Boismortier, captain of the Aqua Deer squad, and had seven children together in a span of two years.
Black Clover also confirmed a fan-favorite pairing for Sisgoleon. In chapter #392, Mereoleona is aboard the ship bound for the Hino country while the others say goodbye to Ichika. Mimosa also mentions that Mereoleona is being courted in Hino, and she is later seen in a panel fighting Yosuga in the background while Ichika and Ryuya watch. This subtly confirms that Yosuga and Mereoleona are perfect battle freaks together and that Asta kept his promise to introduce him to a tough woman with fire magic.
How Black Clover's Finale Sees Asta Become The Greatest Wizard King
Not only did Asta become the youngest Wizard King in history despite being a peasant, but he also fulfilled the dreams of his predecessors. Lumière's dream of all races living together in peace and Julius's dream of a kingdom without discrimination came true, as seen in the finale: Nick, the boy Asta saved in chapter #9; one of the orphans from Hage village, Nash; and Licht's descendants can now take the exam to join the Magic Knights without fear.
Asta changed the kingdom for the better, inspiring a new generation of people from all races and social classes to dream. Asta's impact also helped make Hage Village a tourist destination, promoting the appeal of the nomotatoes. In addition to influencing former villains to work for the Clover Kingdom, which has undergone great development in a short time as seen by the giant aircraft in which Asta arrived in the last chapter.
This means that Asta's journey changed everyone's lives, resulting in a satisfying end for the hero. Even so, Asta doesn't forget those who helped him along the way, which is evident in his new Wizard King outfit, which incorporates a piece of Julius's red robe.
Black Clover's Anime Is Set To Adapt Its Final Arcs Spectacularly
After five years of dormancy, being abruptly halted despite running weekly episodes on a regular basis, Black Clover is returning for what appears to be a stellar second season. Black Clover's return is all the more triumphant thanks to Studio Pierrot's swap to a seasonal model in recent years, enabling a level of cinematic quality akin to that of regular Bleach compared to Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. This means that Black Clover, despite already being low on the filler, will be laser-focused and tightly-paced as the anime adapts the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc next, with a clear path ahead to cover the rest of the story through the manga's finale in the seasons ahead.
The visuals are spectacular, too, with Asta's Devil Union being every bit as gorgeous as the fans could hope, while he and his allies tackle the Dark Triad, attempt to rescue Captain Yami, and prevent a terrible ritual. The anime incorporates much of the original staff minus the enormous production constraints once imposed on them by a weekly schedule, meaning anime-onlys may not have to wait long to experience the final battles, and the last skirmish to decide the next Wizard King, for too long.
What's Next For Black Clover's Franchise
It's clear that author Yuki Tabata had problems due to the pressure of serializing Black Clover, which improved after he switched magazines. Although this might suggest there's no possibility of more content for Black Clover, the story itself planted the seeds for a potential continuation.
While Asta fulfilled his dream, there are still stories with potential within the vast world of Black Clover. From delving into the origins of dwarves like Charmy to more about Feremena, the user of the Spirit of Earth who became the Diamond Kingdom's queen, to a storyline based on the development of magical artifacts, which was heavily implied in the last chapter with Ichika's translator and Asta's aircraft.
Nevertheless, the manga's final message tells fans to stay tuned for Yuki Tabata's next work. Additionally, a new fan book and the final volume of Black Clover are set to be released in August 2026, which could bring more information about the series' future. Black Clover currently has a second season in development, so the franchise still has much more to offer. Certainly, as one of the most popular shōnen manga in recent years, Black Clover's legacy could continue to grow, so it's too soon to say a definitive goodbye to the characters.
