The John Wick franchise hasn't lost steam, after releasing one TV spin-off on top of five films. Last year's Ballerina proved the universe could expand with new lore, without derailing the narrative of the mainline series. The clamor for spin-offs really ramped up with John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, where Halle Berry's Sofia Al-Azwar became an instant fan-favorite. Three other characters were also built up in John Wick: Chapter 4: Shimazu Akira (Rina Sawayama), Mr. Nobody (Shamier Anderson), and Caine (Donnie Yen), the last of whom was the undisputed standout for his unique set of skills. After three years of anticipation, an upcoming John Wick spin-off has finally wrapped up filming.
Caine was immediately compelling because he is a conflicted assassin, having been forced to come out of retirement to protect his daughter. He started as a reluctant antagonist on the hunt for John Wick, but soon grew tired of the Marquis, who ordered the hit on Wick. Caine turned out to be an anti-hero in the end, but a post-credits scene teased his reckoning. That will likely be resolved in From the World of John Wick: Caine.
Donnie Yen reprises Caine in the spin-off, which is set in the aftermath of John Wick: Chapter 4. Plot details remain under wraps, but at least one story thread is confirmed in the casting. Caine stars Bill Nighy (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1), Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Jacky Heung (League of Gods), and Rina Sawayama, who returns as Shimazu Akira, Shimazu Koji's daughter. Caine prompted Akira's revenge storyline after killing Koji in Chapter 4.
Yen took to Instagram to announce that they have finished filming. The spin-off centers around Caine, who was released from all of his commitments to the High Table in Chapter 4. Yen co-wrote the story and directed the feature, which is mostly set in Europe and Hong Kong. His career spans over 40 years of directing, producing, and starring in action films with standout performances in Hero, Rogue One, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, but he's best known for his IP Man quadrilogy. Last March, he teased how his spin-off fits into the John Wick universe.

My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story. As both director and actor, I'm excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I've learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new."
John Wick: Chapter 5 was also confirmed last year, with Keanu Reeves set to return as the titular assassin. It's still unclear how the story will proceed, since he has already gained his freedom from the High Table, and Reeves had also previously emphasized that Wick died in Chapter 4. However, it's evident they've found a way to somehow resurrect him.
