Playdatetells the story of Brian Jennings (Kevin James), an accountant trying to bond with his stepson after being laid off from work. Lucas (Benjamin Pajak) is socially awkward, and Brian does all he can to make the boy feel more confident. When he seems to make a new friend in the neighborhood, Brian sees a chance to help Lucas and even accepts a playdate with the other dad. Jeff Eamon (Ritchson) is a very nice man, but from the get-go, things feel...off. The other boy, CJ (Banks Pierce), is exceptionally strong and a little emotionally "detached."
Things take a turn when a fight breaks out at Buckee Cheese, and Brian realizes Jeff is not who he says he is, quickly becoming embroiled in a larger conspiracy that sees the two father-son duos team up to fight the shadowy organization chasing Jeff and CJ. This is no ordinary playdate, as Jeff isn't the average suburban dad, and the initially light-hearted outing turns into a fight for survival.
The movie falls under the umbrella of absurdist comedy, to the point where the action feels a bit secondary in some parts. The sci-fi subplot, the wildly hilarious needle drops, and the constant pop culture nods by Ritchson's character all help in relieving the tension. You will laugh more than you initially expected.
Nevertheless, there are also enough action sequences to appeal to viewers looking for a quick, edge-of-your-seat watch. Some stand out more than others, with the fight in the playground, the well-designed car chases, and the final showdown at the "factory" serving as the highlights of the movie. Then again, this is a buddy action comedy, and the dynamics between the two leads are actually the driving force behind the film. Without their comedy-based chemistry, Playdate would not work.
