A new horror remake is surging up the Netflix charts.
The streaming service has been producing original movies and television shows since the early 2010s and has thus built up an enormous library of titles from every possible genre. This includes a number of prominent horror hits, including the post-apocalyptic monster movie Bird Box (which is their sixth most-watched English-language movie ever), the Addams Family spinoff Wednesday(the first season of which still tops the chart of the platform's most-watched English-language series, while season 2 is at No. 5), and a brand-new remake of a 15-year-old classic.
The project in question is the new K-drama Spooky in Love, which is a remake of the 2009 South Korean romantic comedy Spellbound, which starred Son Ye-jin (2025's No Other Choice) as a woman with the ability to see ghosts, who falls in love with a magician played by Lee Min-ki (Very Ordinary Couple). The remake, which stars Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) and Yang Se-jong (Dr. Romantic), reimagines the male lead as a prosecutor and has the duo solve paranormal crimes together. The show debuted on July 18 and airs on Saturdays and Sundays on tvN and Netflix.
Per Netflix, Spooky in Love has already landed on the platform's global chart of the most-watched non-English television series for the week of July 13 through July 19. Even though the first episode was only available on the platform for two days out of that week and the second was only available for one, they amassed 3.5 million viewing hours from 1.7 million viewers, landing at No. 8 on the chart above the Japanese sci-fi thriller Human Vapor (No. 9) and the Spanish romance The Map of Longing (No. 10).
To compare, these two episodes of the Netflix K-drama had more views during the measured week than the English-language title Sullivan's Crossing season 4 (1.3 million), which debuted on Netflix on June 30, and tied with Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 (1.7 million), which is resurging on the chart thanks to season 2 of the live-action adaptation debuting on June 25.
This is thanks to a large amount of regional success, particularly in Asia and South America. In addition to landing on the Top 10 chart in its home territory of South Korea, it charted in 16 other territories, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.
Because Spooky in Love is a rare weekly show for Netflix, this instant chart success is likely a good sign that it will continue to climb the chart rapidly. So far, only two episodes are available, but as more episodes air, those viewing hours will be added to the hours accumulated by the first two episodes as more people around the globe catch up with the hit series.
Because Spooky in Love is set to air on Netflix every Saturday and Sunday for at least five more weekends, its viewership will very likely snowball, especially considering the fact that this early chart appearance may pique the attention of viewers who were unaware of it when it debuted. While it remains to be seen if the movie can hit No. 1, either regionally or globally, it should have a strong shot at the top of the chart if it shows strong viewer retention through the end of August.
