Peter Parker's return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is coming with a lot of changes this summer.
Tom Holland is making his way back to the MCU timeline after five years, following the game-changing ending in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. After Doctor Strange's spell caused everyone to forget who Peter is, the web-crawler now lives in a world where he is on his own.
During the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press conference attended by ScreenRant, Zendaya elaborated on MJ's new chapter in the upcoming Phase 6 installment. She shared how "in previous films, MJ was always the pessimist, and it was Peter that was always the optimist. And so it's interesting to see that reversal. You know, now that he's alone, he's kind of adopted that negativity, and she's adopted his positivity without even knowing it. So there's clearly something still there."
The trailers have shown that both MJ and Ned are building out their lives when the Spider-Man: Brand New Day story first picks up, despite no longer remembering Peter. Jacob Batalon, who plays Ned, shared at the same press conference, "Yeah, I think unfortunately for Peter, you know, Ned and MJ live really great full lives."
However, Ned and MJ can tell that something is missing, as he elaborated, "Yeah, but I think there's also like that sort of veil of they do feel like something's kind of missing. And I think, I guess like for Ned, really like the Spidey Tracker thing is kind of like his way of finding like that missing link between them and Spider-Man." Previously, Holland has teased that "No one remembers that Spider-Man is Peter Parker apart from one person," but it remains to be seen who that individual actually is.

Sony Pictures recently released the final Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, with marketing entering its final week before the summer blockbuster arrives in theaters. After nearly half a decade of waiting, time will tell how Holland's new installment will do at the box office.
