BLAINE, Minn. – Three events remain in the FedEx Cup regular season, which makes it crunch time for players to solidify playoff status. Some pros are still searching for magic and are attempting to shake things up with a possible spark from a caddie change.
Desperate times, they say, call for desperate measures.
As a result, the caddie carousel has a few transactions to report. As noted previously on Golfweek, Billy Horschel split with caddie Micah Fugitt in May and has been trying out some other options. Starting this week at the 3M Open, he’s going to be using his brother-in-law as he makes his playoff push. Horschel is currently No. 101 and has missed three straight cuts.
Joe LaCava IV, son of the legendary caddie of Fred Couples and Tiger Woods and currently Patrick Cantlay’s bagman, will be on the bag of Jon VanDerLaan, who enters the week at No. 171 in the season-long standings and needs to get hot. LaCava IV had been on the bag of Joe Highsmith last year when he bagged the Cognizant Classic, but Highsmith (150th) has moved on to veteran caddie Chad Reynolds.
Also, Derek Smith returns on the bag of Taylor Moore, who is 88th in the FedEx Cup. Smith previously worked for Denny McCarthy, who is No. 97 and hasn’t finished better than T-12 this season. McCarthy has picked up Geno Bonnalie, who has worked with multiple players since his split with Joel Dahmen just over a year ago. Bonnalie became a fan favorite for his role in the first two seasons of the Netflix series "Full Swing."
