Thousands of households in Connecticut were without power Tuesday afternoon as thunderstorms hit the southwestern part of the state.
Eversource, the state's largest utility company, reported 2,047 outages as of 1:40 p.m. on its outage map, with that number climbing to about 4,400 in the late afternoon. By 9:45 p.m., that number had fallen to 2,900.
Weston, Branford, Westport and Norwalk each reported hundreds of outages, according to Eversource. Weston had the most out of those towns with 939.
Many of the outages listed fallen tree limbs as the cause.
Tricia Taskey Modifica, an Eversource spokesperson, said just about all of the outages their customers were experiencing were related to storm damage.
"Our crews are responding as quickly and safely as possible to all damage locations so they can restore power for affected customers," she said. "With storms expected to continue through the afternoon and evening our crews will continue to respond to any additional outages."
United Illuminating, which covers portions of Fairfield and New Haven counties, reported 1,283 outages at 1:40 p.m., but that number had fallen to 54 by 9:45 p.m.
The outages came as severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain to parts of Connecticut, causing fallen trees and flooding.
