Authorities rescued 80 cats and 12 dogs from a residence on SW Meadowlark Circle following a multi-agency response to severe hazardous conditions inside the home.
Members of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Division, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, and the Martin County Fire Rescue HAZMAT Team collaborated during the rescue operation.
HAZMAT personnel were deployed to secure the structure and allow animal services officers to safely enter and retrieve the pets from the environment.
Following the rescue, animal welfare personnel worked through the night to conduct health assessments and deliver medical care to each animal. As of today, officials have successfully identified the owners of five animals and are working to trace the origins of the remaining pets.
Following an investigation into the living conditions, 77-year-old Gail Giustino was arrested and charged with one count of animal cruelty and one count of confinement of animals without sufficient exercise. Her bond has been set at $50,000.
Sheriff’s office representatives stated that while Giustino intended to help the animals, she was ultimately unable to provide adequate care for them. Officials noted that the department is coordinating efforts to connect Giustino with assistance and local support resources.
