I was resigned to the idea that my walking shoes would never be cute; slipping on chunky dad sneakers, I would remind myself that these are for function, not fashion. But when Natalie Portman wore a pair of sleek black sneakers last summer, I was forced to rethink that.
Portman wore Clifton 9 GTX sneakers from Hoka, my go-to comfy sneaker brand. While Portman’s shoes still had that classic silhouette and ample cushioning (we’re not compromising on support!), the sleek, all-black design made the athletic sneakers feel shockingly cool, so much so that pairing them with her cute denim cut-offs felt completely natural.
