Jennifer Aniston and Katie Holmes have been making a strong case for flip-flops this summer — and having grown up almost exclusively wearing thong sandals, I’m thrilled.
Now as an adult, I’m more particular about the shoes I wear. That’s why I tapped podiatrists Dr. Michelle Morse and Dr. Janine Ferrigno-Taddeo for their expert insights and recommendations.
“While not typically thought of as a comfort shoe, flip-flops can provide support with the right features,” Dr. Ferrigno-Taddeo tells PEOPLE. Her non-negotiables? Memory foam or EVA insoles, which are “typically lightweight and very shock absorbent.”
The podiatrists recommend supportive flip-flops from Dr. Scholl’s, Clarks, Reef, Archies, FitFlop, and Olukai, starting at $32 on Amazon.
Dr. Scholl’s All-Day Flip-Flops
Both podiatrists recommend these Dr. Scholl’s flip-flops for longer outings. According to Dr. Morse, the cushioned insoles and 1.25-inch heel provide “excellent shock absorption” and “more comfort than a flat sandal.” Dr. Ferrigno-Taddeo agrees, adding that “the slight wedge also makes this a stylish option to transition from day to night without sacrificing comfort thanks to the EVA footbed.”
Reef Cushion Melody Flip-Flops
Featuring faux leather thong straps and memory foam insoles, these flip-flops “prevent discomfort and rubbing” while providing “comfort in high pressure areas of the foot like your heel,” Dr. Ferrigno-Taddeo tells PEOPLE. “With any open shoe, you want to feel secure walking for longer stretches and have flexibility that moves with you, and the rubber outsole here allows more flexibility and less wear,” she adds.
Olukai Ohana EVA Flip-Flops
More than 7,000 shoppers have given these supportive flip-flops a five-star rating, and it’s easy to see why. According to Dr. Ferrigno-Taddeo, the contoured footbeds, built-in arch support, and grippy rubber outsoles all work together to help prevent foot fatigue and create a more stable, secure feel.
Archies Arch Support Flip-Flops
Both Jennifer Aniston and Katie Holmes have been spotted wearing Archies flip-flops, so you know they must be good. Dr. Morse says they’re ideal for “shorter excursions,” like morning coffee runs, neighborhood dog walks, and resort lounging. The 1-inch orthotic arch is “extremely comfortable,” and the stretchable straps “fit tightly on your forefoot, so the toes don’t need to grip with every step,” she adds.
Clarks Breeze Reyna Cloudsteppers Flip-Flops
These Clarks flip-flops feature “a stylish upgrade” with a hook-and-loop closure that lets you “adjust the straps throughout the day, especially as feet swell in the summer from walking or the heat,” says Dr. Ferrigno-Taddeo. The lightweight EVA footbeds add cushioning for all-day comfort. “It’s a great choice for a slip-on sandal without sacrificing support,” adds Dr. Morse.
FitFlop Leather Wedge Flip-Flops
“These flip-flops are a go-to for me thanks to their excellent shock absorption and thick, curved midsoles,” Dr. Morse tells PEOPLE. An added bonus, the leather strap sits “higher on the midfoot, so the shoe stays on your foot rather than truly flipping off excessively like other flip-flop styles,” she adds. The low wedge heel is a stylish change of pace from flat sandals, making it a versatile option for the office and date nights.
Reef Water Court Flip-Flops
If your calendar is packed with beach days and waterside activities, you’ll want to add these Reef flip-flops to your rotation as well. Designed with textured rubber footbeds, they’re “water-friendly and offer good traction to safely and securely navigate slippery beach rocks or wet poolside concrete,” says Dr. Ferrigno-Taddeo.
