Mullin: Feds 'actively pursuing' threat to World Cup fan fest

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Monday said federal authorities are “actively pursuing” an investigation into a threat at a World Cup fan fest event.

“It was an intimate threat that because of our federal partnership and our local partnership, being able to work together, we were able to stop it before it became a major incident. It’s still ongoing,” Mullin said during an appearance on Fox News.

“I mean, not the threat’s ongoing, but …we’re still actively pursuing the case,” he added. 

Mullin said he couldn’t reveal details on whether the threat was domestic or foreign, nor could he share the targeted location.

“I can’t give you the location of it, but the threat was about using vehicles. It was specifically towards a fan fest,” the secretary said.

“And fortunately enough, we were able to have coordination with federal partners,” he added. 

Throughout the World Cup, the U.S. hosted 78 matches across 11 cities, including the final match in New Jersey on July 19. 

FBI Director Kash Patel said it was “probably the biggest lift in FBI history.”

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) seized over 300 drones at events related to the World Cup.

Fighter jets also intercepted multiple planes attempting to fly in temporarily restricted airspace Sunday over Bedminster and East Rutherford, N.J.
