Mom shares heartbreaking reality only single parents will understand

Luci Sorg said the concern stems from the frightening reality that there isn't always another adult checking in.

A single mother from Australia is going viral after sharing the heartbreaking reason she keeps food within easy reach of her young children every night.

Luci Sorg, as user lucisorg, placed cookies and bananas in a low cupboard accessible to her two children: Ocean, 3, and 1-year-old Bexley in a clip on TikTok.

Sorg said the viral video, which has been viewed 3.5 million times, was intended to highlight the kinds of worries many solo parents carry.

“I think being a single mom with little support, you overthink a lot of the ‘what ifs’ situations, and one of those was if I was to die, and nobody knew for however long, what would happen to my children?” the Perth resident told Newsweek.

“That’s when I decided to have accessible food and water available at all times.”

Now, every night, she ensures her children have access to food and water without needing an adult’s help.

The practice has since evolved into a dedicated “snack trolley” next to the family’s dining table, stocked with snacks and fruit that her children can access whenever they need them.

“If the unthinkable was to happen, they would at least have access to necessities until help noticed and came,” Sorg said.

While she acknowledged that these thoughts are not constant, she said they are a reality unique to many people raising children alone

“I think people who aren’t single parents don’t understand what single moms and dads deal with,” Sorg explained.

While some solo parents have partners working away from home who regularly check in, she can sometimes go hours—or even days—without speaking to another adult.

‘You’re not crazy for this’

With nearly 2,000 comments on TikTok, Sorg’s video sparked an emotional response, with many parents sharing similar concerns and experiences.

One paramedic-turned-mom said the video reminded her of a call involving a mother who had died and gone unnoticed for days while her toddler remained beside her.

“You’re not crazy for this,” she wrote.

“I downloaded an app called Snug,” another said.

“I check on twice a day and if I miss one then it sends out SOS with my location to two people.”

One contributor recalled supporting a single mom of four with cancer by exchanging daily check-in texts and keeping access to her home in case of an emergency. She later recovered and has since become a grandmother.

Food Critics

Not all of the reactions were supportive, however. Some viewers criticized the choice of food shown in the video, focusing on the cookies and bananas visible on screen.

Sorg said those comments overlooked the broader point.

“There were also yogurts and fruits accessible in the fridge,” she noted.

“This food… was purely just for that night and the children could eat it if there was an emergency that night.”

Despite her worries, Sorg has found ways to give herself peace of mind.

“The best thing I’ve taught my children was how to call 000 if there was an emergency,” she said, referring to Australia’s emergency services number.

“My daughter is only 3 [and] doesn’t completely understand, but it’s a conversation we frequently have,” Sorg continued.

“Making sure to have someone you trust to have a key to your house and know if they don’t hear from you after a few hours to come and check on you and your children.”
