Molly Shannon is opening up about why her friendship with Will Ferrell is the best by par.
In Netflix’s new golf comedy series The Hawk, the actress plays the fiery ex-wife of Ferrell’s character, Lonnie Hawkins. Due to their history, it didn’t take much to convince her to take the part.
“When Will asked me, ‘Molly, can you play my wife on this show?’ I was like, ‘Yes. I don’t need to see anything. I’m in.’ You know what I mean?” Shannon, 61, tells PEOPLE. “Of course it’s a hell yes.”
Shannon and Ferrell’s longtime friend and former Saturday Night Live writer Harper Steele also helped create the show and served as an executive producer.
“I was so close to Harper at SNL, so I feel very protected getting to work with Will and Harper,” Shannon says. “I just don’t worry at all.”
Ferrell and Shannon first starred together on SNL in 1995. They later went on to appear together in projects including 1998’s A Night at the Roxbury, 1999’s Superstar and 2006’s Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
Ferrell, 59, tells PEOPLE that his friendship with Shannon today is just as rooted in comedy.
“I think we both laugh at certain behavior patterns that we see in each other,” Ferrell says. “Like, ‘Oh, I know what you’re thinking.’ Or Molly will say, ‘You didn’t like that person, did you?’ But I think we still have the same funny. The weird things make us both laugh.”
The Hawk marks Ferrell’s first-ever scripted series regular role. In the show, he stars as Hawkins, a washed-up, white-wine-loving golf legend chasing one last shot at glory by competing to win the Grand Slam. The catch? To pull off his comeback, he’ll have to beat not only his own son Lance (Jimmy Tatro), a rising golf star, but also his longtime rival, Golden Fisk (Luke Wilson).
With the help of his loyal caddie and partner in crime Sam (Fortune Feimster), Hawkins proves exactly why legends never die.
