The MLB Trade Deadline is quickly approaching on Aug. 3. Among the players being considered for a trade is Colorado Rockies All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman.
It’s been rumored that the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees would acquire him. The Yankees are reportedly satisfied with their present catchers.
Meanwhile, Jim Bowden of The Athletic is reporting that the Red Sox are looking to snatch Goodman up. In return, the Rockies would get LHP Connelly Early, RHP Kyson Witherspoon, shortstop Marcelo Mayer, and catcher Carlos Narváez. According to Bowden, Rockies fans are curious as to why they would want to trade their only All-Star.

But Bowden sees parallels to Goodman being traded to decisions he made when he was the general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
“However, in my early days in the league with the Pittsburgh Pirates, we did this exact same thing. We traded our best player — catcher Tony Peña, a four-time All-Star — and brought back center fielder Andy Van Slyke, right-hander Mike Dunne and catcher Mike LaValliere. It was a deal that turned the Pirates from cellar dwellers to contenders in just a couple of years.”
In 1987, the Pirates traded Tony Peña to the St. Louis Cardinals. That year, they made it to the World Series before losing to the St. Louis Cardinals. Afterward, the Pirates became one of the most popular teams in MLB. They made it to the postseason from 1990 to 1992. In all three years, the Pirates won the National League East Division and made it to the NLCS.
Goodman is batting .257 with 89 hits, 30 home runs, and 56 RBIs. He is fresh off becoming the second Rockies player to have two three-home-run games.
